Numerical simulation of two-stroke low speed turbocharged engine in heavy sea conditions
Two-stroke low speed turbocharged engines are the most common marine propulsion machinery of modern cargo ships. These engines use constant pressure turbocharging system that has very favourable characteristics for operation of the ship in a stable load conditions. Main engine loads change significantly during navigation in adverse weather conditions and in some extreme cases can lead to engine stopping. This paper presents a numerical simulation of two-stroke low speed turbocharged engine in the heavy sea conditions. The numerical model that describes the operation of the main propulsion engine is based on zero-dimensional model of the internal combustion engine. Analysis of the turbocharger behaviour with normal and reduced turbine flow cross-section is also performed. In this way, main propulsion engine peak performances can be examined and optimized in extreme navigation conditions without any risk to the ship, crew or cargo safety.
