Roald Dahl Centenary Cardiff Conference
From 16th to 18th June 2016 Cardiff University was home to the Roald Dahl Centenary Cardiff Conference, the interdisciplinary international conference organised in the city of Dahl's birth to celebrate and mark his centenary year. The aim of the conference was to defamiliarise and position this incredibly unique author in the context of the twentieth- and twenty-first-century culture, as well as to observe his work for both children and adults from various perspectives and as complementary parts of his opus. Furthermore, there was much talk of his contributions to other fields, such as education or medicine, his legacy, and, inevitably, his life. Featuring speakers from around the world, the conference also included the notable plenaries, Prof. David Rudd (University of Roehampton) with his lecture “Of Grammatizators and Grammatology: Dahl’s Chickens Come Home to Roost”, Dahl's biographer Donald Sturrock, author of Storyteller: The Life of Roald Dahl (2010) and editor of Dahl's correspondence, and Professor of Neurology at Liverpool University, Tom Solomon, the author of Roald Dahl's Medicine (2017), which combines popular science, biography and memoir examining Dahl's interest in medicine.
