The impact of Brexit on the pound sterling
The United Kingdom leaving the European Union, the so-called Brexit, made a huge impact on the British economy. This paper analyses the impact on the Pound, by looking at GBP/USD and GBP/EUR exchange rates. Both these exchange rates were in fact volatile post-Brexit, especially immediately after the referendum held on 23rd of June 2016. Since then however, the pound has become more stable. On the other hand, the cheap pound failed to boost UK exports as hoped. The trade deficit did narrow, but this was due to other variables and not lower exchange rates. Even though UK remained as one of the top countries for FDI in Europe in 2016, Brexit creates uncertainty for investors, by affecting the key factors which make the UK so attractive. As the process of Brexit develops in the next two years, the pound can be expected to fluctuate again. There are also many other factors which are putting pressure on the pound sterling right now.
