Determination of force coeficients for wind force calculation by computation fluid dynamics
Force coefficients for calculation of wind force acting on a structural element are obtained from CFD simulations. Bridge piers with different cross-sections are investigated for the purpose of finding aerodynamic information. 3D numerical modelling of an air flow is carried out using ANSYS Fluent software. Verification of results is done comparing with values prescribed by EN 1991-1-4 standard. It has been shown that the accuracy of results is satisfying since relative differences are within acceptable limits. Application of CFD for finding aerodynamic forces, i.e. force coefficients proved to be justified. Parameters for other shapes not defined by the specified norm are found out from numerical simulations and suggested for future engineering practice, without expensive experiments.
