Solid-State Synthesis and Structure of p-Substituted Azobenzene Amides

Azobenzene derivatives are extensively exploited as photoswitches and functional light-responsive materials. Introducing azobenzene amide scaffolds into biomacromolecules, i.e. proteins and nucleosides, have been utilized for controlling their structure, function and interactions in vitro. Herein we report synthesis and characterization of p-substituted azobenzene amides with selected amino acid functionalities (Scheme 1). Azobenzene amides, prepared mechanochemically or in solution, were structurally characterized by crystallographic and spectroscopic methods.
