Mechanhanistic study of mechanochemical Knoevenagel reaction
Organic synthesis is widely used in pharmaceutical and chemical industry, but the need for cleaner and safer synthesis was the key for success of solid state reactions.[1] Mechanochemical organic reaction are carried out without the need for solvents, conventional catalysts, in shorter reaction time and with higher product yield.[2] Development of in situ methods in real time which permit reaction monitoring was extremely important for further development of mechanochemical methods and investigation of mechanistic studies. The Knoevenagel condensation is a nuchleophilic addition reaction of an active hydrogen compound to a carbonyl group and it is used for forming a new C-C bond.[3] Here we present simultaneous synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and Raman for in situ monitoring of mechanochemical Knoevenagel reactions between aromatic aldehyde 1-4 and barbituric acid. In situ monitoring enabled us direct insight into the fundamental aspects of solid-state Knoevenagel reactions and enabled us optimization of this important class of organic reactions.
