Religious Changes in Croatia: Some empirical Data from 1972, 1982 and 1999 in the Zagreb Region

Comparative data on the widespread presence of identification of religious preference and religious identification, religious beliefs and practice provided insight into basic movements and changes which occured in the researched region in the period from 1972, 1982 to 1999. The research region in 1999 included an almost prevailing Cathilic population (92%). In religious identification changes moved from somewhat greater religiosity in 1972, to the aproximation of the share of religious and non-religious respondents in 1982, toward a significant growth of religious respondents in 1999. The whole researched population has manifested widely spread traditional forms of religiosity. Religious respondents had all the basic sacraments and religious training in the family and through religious education in a high pecentage, but also the significant number of the uncertain, indifferent and non-religious respondents. This indicates the great significance given to the transfer of traditional Catholicism on the family level. In actual religiosity, on the personal level, the most widespread are beliefs in God, divine creation of the world and humanity and divine basis of morality. On the level of prescribed religious practice, religious life is problematized. The least represented are those forms of religious practice, which demand regular engagement of the believer. On the family level, the most spread are those forms of religious practice, which also include the traditional and customary - celebration of major Church holidays but also religious education of children. According to all indicators, differences between convinced believers and religious who do not accept everything that their religion teaches are visible. Convinced believers are more ready to accept fundamental religious beliefs and are significantly more active in personal and family religious practices. However, even among this group one cannot talk of religiostiy (in the religious-structural sense and ideally-typically) as of a homogenous phenomenon, which would be characterized by the relatively equal development of all dimensions. Problematiozation occurs in the dimension of belief and esspecially in the dimension of religious prctice, what point to the process of privatisation of religion. The data according to all stated indicators in the groups of uncertaon, indeifferent and non-religious respondents confirm the fundamental insights on traditional foundation of religious preference in the researched Zagreb region.
