Hydrogenated iron nanoparticles: unexplored dust grains

Studies in materials sciences have shown that Fe atoms and Fe nanoparticles could bind many H atoms. The importance of hydrogenated nanoparticles for a missing iron problem in astrophysics has recently been suggested [1]. The FeH molecule was already detected in the Sun, brown dwarfs, S stars, and M giants. Therefore, hydrogenated nanoparticles could be detected in winds of S stars and M giants. IRC +10216, were metallic iron and the FeCN molecule were already observed, is also a possible environment for a detection of hydrogenated iron nanoparticles. That FeH and FeH2 could form on dust grains was suggested a long time ago from laboratory astrophysics experiments [2]. In this work we present density functional theory calculations of IR [1] and X-rays [3] spectra of hydrogenated iron nanoparticles and discuss ways to detect them in space.
