Research on active tectonics in densely populated Kvarner area characterized by highly dissected Dinaric Karst (GEOSEKVA Project)

The wider area of Kvarner, including the City of Rijeka, is characterized by rapid urbanistic and infrastructural growth. Due to active tectonics and complex geological structure the area is characterized by highly dissected Dinaric Karst. All the mentioned geological and geomorphological features increase the possibility of geohazard events. The area is known for frequent occurrence of relatively weak earthquakes and occasional occurrence of moderate to large earthquakes, which, according to historical documents, locally caused severe damage. Seismic activity is most probably caused by dextral horizontal movement along one of the major fault zones with a Dinaridic strike (SE- NW), which is probably fragmented by a still inadequately defined system of transversal Kvarner faults. Such fault system in combination with the assumed gravitational sliding of early orogenic thin-skinned tectonic cover, probably resulted with a very complex transpressional- transtensional regime in the Kvarner region. The aim of the GEOSEKVA project is to improve the interpretation of the earthquake mechanisms in the investigated area, using 3D geological modelling based on modern lithostratigraphic maps and geological cross- sections, available borehole data, and interpreted seismic data. Furthermore, the neotectonic movements will be detected by analyses of an updated earthquakes catalog, investigations on the youngest deposits on the shallow sub-bottom using the geo- acoustical method, by remote and direct study of selected geomorphological features, and by (re)interpretation and dating of Quaternary deposits on land. Compiling the data in the integrated seismotectonic model will be a quality base for the next step, which should include further interdisciplinary research, i.e. integration of more detailed geological and seismological, as well as geodetic data, with the aim to build a relevant geodynamic model of the Kvarner region. GEOSEKVA is a Research Project funded by the Croatian Science Foundation (IP-06-2016-1854).
