Application of ash from agricultural biomass in concrete
Cement production, the main component of concrete, leads to high energy consumption and emissions of the greenhouse gas CO2. Trying to act in accordance with the principles of sustainable construction, building industry tends finding new alternative concrete materials. In the binders, various powder materials are studied that are able to partially or completely replace cement in concrete. One of these materials is ash from biomass. The term biomass refers to all organic matter caused by the growth of plants and animals. Eastern Croatia is traditionaly oriented towards the cultivation of various agricultural crops whose sowing produces large quantities of agricultural waste to be handled. One of the effective methods of wasting agricultural biomass is its use in the industry as fuel. Burning biomass remaining ashes that could be used as a partial replacement for cement in concrete. This paper provides an overview of the world's research on the use of ash from biomass as a binder in concrete. It also presents the results of preliminary research of ash from agricultural biomass of the eastern Croatia used by local industry as fuel, as part replacement of cement in concrete.
