Ion tracks on insulating surfaces
Penetration of the very energetic heavy ion through the material can introduce permanent damage along its trajectory called an ion track. On the place of the ion impact, nanostructures can be found on the surface by means of atomic force microscopy. Recently, SHI irradiation performed at grazing incidence sparked intense research after a chain-like morphology of ion tracks at the surface of SrTiO3 was discovered. [1, 2]. Here we present review of our recent efforts [3, 4], and some new experimental results, demonstrating surface nanostructuring (ripples, rifts and similar) when grazing incidence irradiation geometry is applied.
