Competencies for Creativity Development of Art Education Students

The challenge presented to university teachers in these times of profound changes, both in contemporary art and in social values, is to continually develop and improve their own and the students’ competencies, with the principal objective of enabling them for independent work and stimulating positive models of thinking and behavior (Jurčić, 2014). Visual arts education contains a number of specificities that concentrate on the affirmation of competencies aimed at developing creativity (Gelūnas, Klimas, Bogdanienė, Vengris, 2012). The objective in visual arts teaching is to take these specificities into consideration in detecting the advantages and disadvantages of end competencies using clusters of learning outcomes offered to students by the existing study program in Art Education. Based on an analysis and comparison of competencies acquired by students in similar study programs, as well as competencies derived from contemporary artistic processes, the plan is to develop guidelines for changing the existing curriculum, which should correspond to the needs of contemporary teaching and the acquisition of competencies needed for creativity development.
