Tool wear monitoring in calcium silicate machining – a preliminary study

Strict fire safety regulations increase the application of products that can ensure integrity and insulation of protected objects for certain period of time. Today, most commonly used material for that purpose is calcium silicate – Ca2SiO4. Calcium silicate raw material is usually manufactured in the form of boards, which are then further processed mainly by circular saw cutting, drilling and milling before being assembled into the finished product. The main production requirement is to increase the autonomy of machining systems and productivity with minimum downtime and operator intervention. Due to the high concentration of abrasive particles in the calcium silicate material, process automation represents a demanding task. One of the most important features which need to be automated is a tool wear monitoring. Having in mind that the dynamics of the tool wear is highly non-linear and complex, construction of the reliable and precise tool wear monitoring system is quite a challenging task.
