Paleoradiological analysis of mummifed parts from Egyptian Collection of Zagreb Archeological Museum

Purpose: The purpose was to analyze and compare images of mummified body parts dated to Ancient Egypt gained by standard paleoradiological tools (X-ray and CT) with those gained by MR and micro CT, techniques which have till now been rarely used in the scientific study of mummies. Methods and Materials: Four hands and two feet were scanned in LL and AP direction at the University Hospital "Dubrava" on X-ray unit (RAD Speed, Shimadzu, Europa GmbH, Duisburg, Germany). Transverse CT slices were obtained using 16 x 0.75 collimation and images were reconstructed at 0.75- mm section thickness and 0.7 mm reconstruction increment (RI) using a MDCT unit (Sensation 16 ; Siemens Healthcare, Erlangen, Germany). 3-dimensional (3D), spoiled gradient echo based UTE images of the specimen were acquired on a 1.5 T scanner (Magnetom Avanto, Siemens Healthcare, Erlangen, Germany) employing manufacturer’s head coil, contrast- determining parameters echo time, repetition time and flip angle were chosen 0.07 ms, 15 ms and 45°, respectively. The 40000 radial projections used to reconstruct 256 slices of 1.3x1.3x1.3mm3 isotropic resolution, resulted in an imaging time of 10 min per 3D slab. Postprocessing was performed with OsiriX Imaging Software (Pixmeo, Geneve, Switzerland). Two hands were also scanned using the SkyScan 1076 (Bruker, Belgium) micro CT Scanner with the resolution of 18 um. Results: The analysis revealed that in two feet all bones are present. One hand has only two carpal bones (ossification centers) and in one the lunate bone is missing. In the same hand cortical bone is thinned and demineralization is observed both on X- ray and CT. Several features of osteoarthritis can be observed in all four specimen, ranging from mild subchondral sclerosis to subchondral cysts with osteophytes. On one hand sclerotic lesions on the scaphoid bone are present. Conclusion: Several paleopathological entities were identified ; osteoarthitis, osteoporosis and insula compactae (bone island) and with scarce evidence we could only speculate about Kienböck's disease. MR and micro CT techniques rarely used in paleoradiology, have contributed to higher contrast (MR) and higher spatial (micro CT) resolution. Higher contrast resolution with different intensities of resin like fluids on skin could identify different materials used during mummification, which was previously noted when comparing CT and MR signal in mummies by Cavka et al. (2012 ECR). Higher spatial resolution (up to 18 in our case or up to 9 um possible) could give us new insights into anatomical details and dehidration process of tendons after mummification.
