Parallel EFCS Cytology Symposium: Croatian Cytology Society

This session is organized by the Croatian Society of Clinical Cytology representing our rich cytology tradition and expertise, based on more than 60 years full time practice in cytology. Along with the results of conventional cytology, those obtained by the use of ancillary technologies are presented by the Croatian cytologists covering the topics of lymph node, intraoperative, pulmonary, serous fluid, EUSFNA pancreatic, endometrial and cervical cytology. The outlines of the lectures are: enlarged lymph node algorithms include FNA as the first diagnostic method, followed by the ancillary technologies, representing a safe and accurate technique in the diagnosis, classification and prognosis of lymphomas ; in imprint cytology analysis of SLNs (breast cancer and melanoma) is a rapid, accurate and cost-effective method for routine intraoperative assessment ; targeted therapy depends on specific molecular subtypes of NSLC. Cytologist assess the quality and number of preserved cells, choose the best preservation methods for immunocytochemical and FISH detection of molecular targets ; accurate diagnosis of a serous effusion, combining the clinical data with cytomorphology and immunocytochemistry, becomes feasible in most cases of benign, primary and secondary malignancies in serous effusions ; the cytology of the pancreas and peripancreatic tissues sometimes presents a real challenge for the cytopathologist, covering a wide spectrum of tumours and tumour-like lesions ; endometrial brush cytology is a highly sensitive and specific diagnostic method for detection of benign and malignant endometrial conditions, applicable in the screening of endometrial cancer in high risk women ; in the setting of primary HPV cervical cancer screening, with cytology and colposcopy as a follow-up, high quality and accurate Pap test could upgrade the importance of cytology, becoming a diagnostic, rather than a screening tool ; p16/Ki-67 dual-stain cytology is useful for differential diagnosis of glandular lesions with high sensitivity and specificity for the detection of in situ and invasive glandular cervical cancer.
