Comparison of the Combustion Process in the Spark Ignition and HCCI Engine
The goal of this study is to compare two different combustion processes on the same engine at similar operating conditions. Similar operating conditions mean that the engine tests were performed at the same indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) for the Spark Ignition (SI) and Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion mode at the same engine speed. The predefined IMEP level of SI engine was obtained by throttling the intake, i.e. changing the intake air pressure while for HCCI engine the load was adjusted by setting appropriate air to fuel ratio. Comparison consists of nine operating points for SI and nine for HCCI mode of operation, at three different speeds and three different levels of IMEP.
