MWCNT SURFACTANT SENSOR: INFLUENCE OF THE SENSOR GEOMETRY ON THE RESPONSE CHARACTERISTICS
A potentiometric surfactant sensor cocktail based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and the 1, 3-didecyl-2-methylimidazolium– tetraphenylborate (DMI-TPB) ion pair as a sensing material has been applied on two graphite based carriers. Sensor cocktails have been applied using two immobilisation techniques: a) a dip coating technique has been applied to the graphite wire (0, 9 mm diameter) carrier (a coated wire type) and ; b) a drop casting technique has been applied to the graphite based (2, 0 mm diameter) planar carrier (a disc type). The influence of the geometry of the sensor on the sensor characteristics was investigated measuring the response of the fabricated sensors on anionic surfactant - sodium dodecyl sulphate (DS). The coated wire graphite sensor showed sub- Nernstian response (about 29 mV/decade of activity) and the disc type graphite sensor showed Nernstian response (about 59 mV/decade of activity). Both sensor types are low cost and simple to fabricate.
