Asymptotes and asymptotic behaviour in graphing functions and curves: an analysis of the Croatian upper secondary education within the anthropological theory of the didactics
Asymptotes and asymptotic behavior are key concepts in various areas of mathematics, especially in relation with functions and curves. Hence, the notion of an asymptote appears already in the upper secondary mathematics education: as a theoretical concept, a part of a procedure or as a self- sufficient task in different contexts and grades. In this poster, we elaborate some results from our survey on the didactic transposition of this body of knowledge in the general upper secondary education in Croatia, focusing on its relation to graphing elementary functions and simple plane curves (hyperbolas). The research is conducted within the framework of ATD, addressing institutions of the Croatian mathematical gymnasium textbooks and the cohort of the fifth year mathematical education students at the largest Croatian university.
