Analysis of population structure in bread wheat using SSR markers

Forty bread wheat cultivars were analysed with 26 SSR markers scattered among A, B and D genomes. Set of 26 microsatellite primer pairs yielded total of 108 different alleles with 3.88 alleles per locus with average genetic diversity (He) of 0.57. Population structure estimates average distances between individuals in same cluster were: cluster 1 was 0.4750, cluster 2, 0.4994 and in cluster 3 was 0.4328. First cluster was represented by Croatian cultivars, from Bc Institute (5) and Agricultural Institute Osijek (8). The second cluster was clearly represented by foreign genotypes from France (2) and Austria (5), together with three Croatian genotypes. The last, third, cluster revealed that majority (11) of genotypes clustered had membership probabilities from 80 to 98%, gathered around two varieties Srpanjka and Demetra. All 40 genotypes were largely separated by origin, and then by common ancestors their pedigree.
