Conceptual Metaphor in Football Discourse
This paper offers a quantitative and qualitative description of metaphor use in football match reports. It uses MIPVU methodology to identify all metaphorical expressions in a sample of match reports from the 2016 UEFA European Championship (a total of 4298 lexical units). The texts were parsed and tagged using the Stanford CoreNLP’s tagger, and analyzed using MIPVU. The results show no significant differences between the football register (the present study) and the news register in general (as reported by Steen et al. 2010). On the conceptual level the study has confirmed that war and physical violence are the most conventional ways of understanding and representing football and sport in general, highlighting the competitive nature of the target domain.
