Comparative analyses of Croatias position in the context of international competitiveness

In this paper, relevant information and data published in the Global Competitiveness Report, World Competitiveness Yearbook, Human Capital Index, World Talent Ranking, Doing Business Report and Global Information Technology Report have been analysed for the purpose of providing a review of Croatia's current competitive position in the international environment. The results indicate that Croatian society and economy are lagging behind Europe and the world, as well as the need for more decisive, strategically designed and systematic action based on cooperation with all segments of society. Based on the time series analysis from the Global Competitiveness Report it is visible that Croatia has been experiencing a negative trend with regard to the movement of its competitive position. The reasons for this have also been analysed. They include: unclear and poorly structured government policies, high price of capital, high tax and contribution rates, inefficient legal framework, low crisis resilience, numerous market and administrative obstacles, extremely high unemployment, underdeveloped entrepreneurship, low level of investment into technology development, low level of investment into research and development, as well as knowledge transfer. If it wants to turn around negative movements in competitiveness rankings and in order for the economy to recover, the Croatian government should be oriented towards implementation of structural reforms aimed at mobilizing investments and job creation, which includes fiscal discipline, export-oriented production and strenghtening entrepreneurship.
