Press as a Co-creator of then Cultural Identity of Local Community (1990-2000) in the Example of the City of Zadar in the Republic of Croatia

The paper analyzes the contribution of Zadar's local press to creating the cultural identity of local community in the period from 1990 to 2000. The work is based on the research of articles published in Zadar's local press referring to traditional intangible cultural heritage, which – in the context of the research corpus – include traditional music, carnival festivities, associations etc. We have explored to which extent and in what way Zadar's local press addressed traditional intangible heritage in the pre-war, war and post-war period ; if there are differences in the topics addressed in the mentioned periods ; and if the media image of traditional intangible heritage could be linked with creation of cultural identity. As cultural identity is based on intangible cultural heritage to a large extent, the objective of the paper is to show how Zadar's local press – through publishing articles on traditional intangible cultural heritage – contributed to creation of cultural identity of local community, which in the war and post-war period got a new dimension and a new role. The paper employs qualitative and quantitative content analysis. The research corpus is based on 166 articles published in Zadar's newspapers: Narodni list, Zadarski list, Zadarski Regional, and Zadarski tjednik.
