Complex networks of legal traditions and social structures. A case of Croatia-Dalmatia and Slavonia-Hungary
Medieval society to a great extent defined itself by using and enacting specifying legal customs different from their surrounding. In that respect rather specific place in European legal history should belong to the medieval kingdoms of Croatia-Dalmatia and Slavonia, first characterized by predominantly written legal culture and co-existence of the reception of both Roman and customary law due to its placement on the border between the Mediterranean and its Central European hinterland, while the second with its oral legal tradition. The paper will present various emanations of such legal and social system (from city statutes to the law codes of extra-urban communities ranging from royal or aristocratic counties to peasant autonomies).
