High prevalence of hypersensitivity to nickel : should orthodontists worry?
The 5 year period prevalence of hypersensitivity to nickel among adult patients in Littoral region of Croatia was explored. Epicutaneous tests performed at the University Dermatology Clinic Rijeka from 2011 – 2015 in 1225 subjects (75% females, mean age 46.8 years) were evaluated. The allergens were applied to the upper back skin and left in place for 48 hours. Results were read upon removal of the patches and at 96 hours from the application of allergens. Hypersensitivity testing to nickel was performed with nickel-sulfate. Positive patch test results for nickel were found in 28 % of subjects, more frequently in females than males (33 vs. 11% ; p<0.001). Among the participants with positive test results for nickel 84% showed a positive test result to at least one additional allergen, most frequently to cobalt chloride (19%). Relatively high prevalence of hypersensitivity to nickel should make orthodontists alert when starting treatment that involves use of appliances containing nickel.
