ANALYSIS OF BALLAST WATER QUANTITY AND TYPE OF CARGO IN MAIN PORTS OF CROATIA FOR 2015.
It is estimated that approximately 10 million tons of ballast water is being transmitted per year in Adriatic, from which 1m3 can contain up to 10 000 marine organisms. Transfer of invasive species occurs while loading water at one position, or discharging it on another, which affects stability of the vessel. Potential assimilation of invasive species can lead to the exclusion of native species, which then leads to the disturbance of the ecosystem. In order to protect biodiversity, and to reduce risk of pollution International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships Ballast Water and Sediments was adopted in 2004. This paper analyses type of cargo and quantity of ballast in main Croatian ports foryear 2015.
