Croatian tourism demand in economic crisis conditions
Economic factors namely determine the tourism development, and can have the incentive or restrictive effect on tourism demand movements. The human needs hierarchy shows that a person always seeks to satisfy the primary needs. If so, a person stops focusing on that needs and moves on to the next need that has to be satisfied. Accordingly, tourism can be regarded as a secondary need (a need of a higher order), and tourism need requires spare time and money. Economic crises and recession have a negative impact on all trades, especially on tourism. This means that in the time of crises, tourism needs are being replaced with non-tourism needs, as manifested by decreased number of tourist arrivals, overnight stays or decreased tourist consumption. Thereby, this paper researches the influence of the world economic crisis on the tourism demand in Croatia, by means of foreign and domestic tourist arrivals and overnight stays analysis, in the pre-crisis and crisis period. The objective is to present the effect of restricted tourist demand, due to crisis, on the tourism movements, with special regards to the Republic of Croatia. This approach enables the creation of adequate image of Croatian tourism in crisis conditions and prediction of future movements.
