Refugees became pirates: An overview of the historiographic research into the Senj Uskoks and their activities in the Adriatic Sea
The paper presents an overview of the historiographic research into the phenomenon of Uskoks. In the first part, the author depicts the geopolitical situation in the Adriatic Region in the 16th and the beginning of the 17th centuries emphasizing the role and activities of the Uskoks of Senj. The focus of the second part is the historiography on Uskoks, especially the Ch. W. Bracewell’s seminal work The Uskoks of Senj (1992). Recapitulating the historiographic research prior to this work, the author attempts to determine the real influence of Bracewell's understanding of the phenomenon of Uskoks on the subsequent research into this topic.
