Neologisms in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and its Croatian Translation
This paper deals with neologisms in the novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and its Croatian translation, Harry Potter i kamen mudraca. The following types of neologisms were found: loan words, compounds, shifts, blends, creations de novo and backwards-spelled neologisms. Furthermore, the study examines the word formation processes used to create these neologisms, and provides etymologies for each term from the corpus. Every neologism contains a meaningful link that justifies its etymology, except for creations de novo. Some of these etymologies have been deemed as folk etymologies. This means that the explanation given to justify the meaning of a neologism works within the limits of fictional work itself, but not within the linguistic framework.
