Vallisneria spiralis L. (Hydrocharitaceae) in the flora of Croatia

Vallisneria spiralis L. is a submerged freshwater plant native to Southern Europe, Northern Africa, the Middle East, and Southwest Asia. It has been introduced to several countries of Central and Northern Europe where it is considered invasive. As a thermophilous species, it occurs in these countries only in water bodies with increased water temperature, caused by discharge of cooling water from power plants or by climate change. Since V. spiralis is a widely used aquarium plant, the main route of its introduction is the ornamental trade and release from aquaria into the wild. Vallisneria spiralis is considered native in Croatia, however, due to the lack of historical data the origin of Croatian populations is not completely clear. In Croatia, the species is classified into the Data Deficient (DD) IUCN category and is strictly protected under the Nature Protection Act. Prior to our research, V. spiralis has only been recorded in Lake Modro Oko in 2011 and the Kupa River near Pokupsko in 2016. In the course of our yearly monitoring of macrophytes for ecological status assessment of surface waters in Croatia, the species has been recorded on three new localities in the Kupa River (Jamnička Kiselica, Mala Gorica, Letovanić) and in the Butoniga Reservoir in Istria. Along with the distribution of this species in Croatia, based on all available data, information on ecological characteristics of finding sites, as well as the description of plant communities in which it occurs is provided. Having in mind its present IUCN status, presented data significantly contribute to the knowledge on V. spiralis in Croatia.
