How changes in formal entry procedures for foreign nationals affect inbound tourism demand? The case of Croatia
The imposed obligation of holding passports and visas, as necessary documents to travel from one country to another, still represents a significant formal barrier for international tourism flows and causes additional travel costs for the vast majority of the world's population. The focus of this research is on the interdependence between changes in formal entry procedures for foreign nationals and dynamics of inbound tourism demand from affected tourism generating markets. Such analytical approach is applied on the case study of Croatia, having in mind that Croatia had to adjust its formal entry procedure with the common EU immigration policy two times, in 2007 and 2012. From the findings it is evident that changes in formal entry procedures can have either positive or negative influences on the size and restructuring of inbound tourism demand, depending on the proximity, size, and the status of the country observed as tourism generating market.
