Some economic and social impacts of party tourism development in Mediterranean islands: The case of Croatia
Understanding the nature and scope of economic and social impacts of party tourism development on relatively small and vulnerable island communities is essential for achieving sustainable tourism development in those tourism destinations. The assessment of these impacts is of considerable importance for all destination stakeholders, particularly local businesses and local authorities, so that appropriate corrective actions can be taken well in advance in order to ensure long-term economic development and to reduce adverse social impacts on local community. In the context of this research, party tourism is seen as a powerful marketing tool for attracting mostly young and independent travellers heading to exotic summer tourism destinations in the Mediterranean region to socialize with age peers and have fun. The complexity of impacts arising from party tourism development is discussed and demonstrated on island tourism destinations of Novalja-Zrće and Hvar, internationally recognized as the most visited summer party destinations in Croatia.
