An improved apparatus for vapor–liquid equilibria measurement in systems containing polymer at higher temperatures
The apparatus for total pressure measurement in polymer + solvent systems has been designed recently [1]. In the presented work, the range of functioning of this apparatus was extended to allow investigations at higher temperatures. A direct capacitance pressure sensor (Baratron) was replaced by a pressure transducer, which may be heated up to 200 oC. This is the main feature of the apparatus preventing from condensation of solvent vapors in the pressure cell. Other parts of the whole equipment can be maintained at temperature higher than the system with use of heating tapes. In addition, the solutions with higher concentrations of polymer can be studied in contrast to the ebulliometric method, which is limited because of problems with physical boiling of viscous mixtures. The apparatus was tested using known data. Moreover, the existing data on the poly(ethylene glycol) + water system were supplemented by new experiments covering both the wider range of isotherms and higher molecular masses of polymer.
