The importance of microbial loop in the Middle Adriatic Sea

The role of bacteria and heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) in the microbial food web was studied in the coastal area of the Middle Adriatic. About 32% of the bacterial annual production was incorporated in HNF biomass whereas ciliates incorporated about 8% of bacterial production by direct grazing and about 13% indirectly through HNF. Bacterial carbon flux through microbial loop showed marked seasonal oscillations with considerably higher values recorded during the wormer part of the year.
