Essential oil composition of Primula veris var. columnae
The composition of some secondary metabolites isolated from roots and flowers of Primula genus as well as their healing properties were previously described. The chemical composition of the essential oil of P. veris has not been published previously, and these results on the essential oil composition within this genus are new. GC and GC/MS analyses identified 28 compounds, representing 87.7% of the total oil. The total yield of oil was 0.03% based on dry weight of samples. The oil was characterized by a high concentration of pentacosane (42.9%), methyl 4-methoxysalicylate (17.2%) and benzoic acid, 2-hydroxymethyl ester (6.7%) (Table 1). Existing literature describes the oil composition of P. obconica from China in which methyl 2, 4-dihydroxy-5-methylbenzoate and methyl 2, 4-dihydroxy-6- methylbenzoate were the main compounds. These components are derivatives of methyl benzoate, which in relatively high percentage (3.8%) was identified in the oil of P. veris (Table 1). The results presented in this study enhance knowledge of the composition of the essential oil of the genus Primula
