Optimum size of the specimen for testing concrete compression strength
The influence of the relation of maximum aggregate size and the size of concrete specimen on compression strength has been analyzed. The wall-effect as a parameter which represents this influence is reaffirmed. Two large series, of the pairs of 15 cm and 20 cm cubes made from the same concrete sample, were tested in compression. For each series and each cube size, average compression strength and standard deviation have been determined. The registered effects are discussed, considering theory of the weakest link and the wall-effect. For a given maximum size of aggregate, minimum size of concrete specimen is proposed.
