Frequency of injuries and quality of life in recreational sports

Recreational sport encompass all types of leisure activities that contribute to the development of creative potential, health, life optimism, pleasure and quality of life. Numerous injuries, problems with locomotor system, location of injuries, as well as the seriousness of their consequences, follow all sports events, sport in general and people engaged in sport activities, including recreational sport. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of injuries and quality of life among subjects engaged in two types of recreational sport, "crossfit" and handball. The study included 60 participants, 30 in each sport group. We collected data on the frequency and types of injuries, the quality of life was evaluated using WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. The results showed that almost half of the participants in both groups reported injuries in the last two years even though there were no differences between two groups regarding the frequency of injuries. The quality of life in all domains showed satisfying values in both groups of recreational athletes. Participants in "crossfit" group were more satisfied with their physical health. Dealing with stress and socialising were the main motivators for participation in recreational sports. Irregular stretching before and after training can be a risk factor that contributes to relatively high frequency of injuries in these participants. We can conclude that participants who are recreationally engaged in this two sports, are satisfied with their quality of life and health, and despite the occurrence of injuries, they consider sport as a good way of dealing with stress and the opportunity for socializing with others. Taking into consideration the limitations of this study, the results provide insight into some aspects of recreational sport and the quality of life of those involved.
