Memoria S. Chrysogoni: between the legend on the Transfer of Relics and the Ownership over Monastic Land
The paper explores the relation between local hagiography of St Chrysogonus (more precisely the mention of the location of his grave in the vicinity of Zadar) and the particular set of documents seemingly attesting the continuous interest of the community of St Chrysogonus in acquiring the particles of land around what is interpreted as sacred lieu de memorie. The author focuses on the relevance of this specific relation in an attempt to understand this particular (if unexplored) example of the bond between the symbolic “control” of social memory expressed through hagiographic text and the actual control of the physical property – the rural church and the land in its vicinity.
