Frequency of complications in patients treated with plaster cradle in emergency departments

Frequency of complications in patients treated with plaster cradle in emergency departments whose immobilisation has been made by nurses/medical technicians with prior work experience in surgical plaster rooms is lower than in patients whose immobilisations have been done by nurses/medical technicians educated for the needs of plastering in emergency departments. Materials and methods: Research – April and May 2015 in GH Našice, CBC Osijek, CH Čakovec and GH Dr Tomislav Bardek Koprivnica. Sample – 153 patients and 34 nurses/med. technicians. Patients treated with dorsal forearm and lower leg cradle in emergency departments and nurses/med. technicians who set plaster cradles have been included. Excluding factor: diabetes and reposition of bone fragments. Research instruments – two anonymous questionnaires created for the needs of research. The participants have been divided into two groups. The first group – participants treated in institutions where immobilisation in emergency departments has been done by nurses/med. technicians with prior work experience in surgical plaster rooms. The second group - – participants treated in institutions where immobilisation in emergency departments has been done by nurses/med. technicians educated for the needs of plastering in emergency departments. Descriptive and nonparametric statistical data analysis has been applied with the α=0.05 level of significance. Results: Immobilisation lasted approximately the same in both groups. To the statement: “Immobilisation was comfortable for me, ”98, 7% participants of the first group and 38, 5% of the second answered positively. 60 % of the first group participants deny the presence of inhibitions, while 65.5% of the second group participants mention at least one inhibition. Bedsores of different intensity are present in 65.4% of the second group participants. This complication is not present in the first group. Plaster cradles in the first group are adequate in 86, 7% of cases, while in 59% of the cases in the second group, they are not adequate (length, volume and/or structural defects). The question whether the education they have undertaken is sufficient, 91, 7% of the first group nurses/med. technicians answer “YES”, whereas 63, 6% of them in the second group answer “NO”. High percentage of nurses/med. technicians in both groups wants to take part in further education. Conclusion: The hypothesis has been confirmed. The cause of the better results in the first group definitely lies in “the years of experience” and possessing more specific knowledge, but we consider that those differences can be levelled with standardized education. High percentage of the second group participants consider that the education they have went through is not enough and that is one of the claims that needs to be considered separately, especially because they want to take part in further education. Improving knowledge and skills of nurses/med. technicians will result in pleased patients and shorter treatments with lower costs, where only knowledge and conscientious work bring safety, credibility and respect.
