Education of Engineers through Math / Current Practices
Education of Engineers through Math / Current Practices In this talk we would like to say a few words how we recognize and promote the role of Mathematics in engineers curriculum and the role of Mathematics in continuing education of engineers. Thinking that in teaching of mathematics there is no need of change since the fundamentals of mathematics basically do not change, is a common misconception. The truth is the opposite, the approach to teaching math should be very adaptive for several reasons. One reason lies in the fact that there is a disproportion in the level of knowledge and skills among new students when entering high education institutions. Furthermore, the mathematical education must be integrated in the constantly changing surrounding engineering study course. During the last decade, these topics have been most discussed through workshops, seminars and conferences. Consequently, curriculum documents on high level goals and outcomes have been brought by many various institutions. One of the most important institution is the European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI) with SEFI Mathematics Working Group . Their documents provide orientation for lecturers in designing mathematics curricula for a specific engineering program. Although designing mathematics curricula has been for us a continuous task, a bigger step forward resulted after joining the Bologna Process in 2005. Next steps were made in the years 2010 and 2015 when evaluations of the university study program for Geodesy and Geoinformatics took place. We then found an opportunity to further refine math courses, learning outcomes as well as competences students should acquire.
