Toxicity risks associated with the recovery of bioactive compounds from marine sources
Fish, shellfish and seafood products have a strong reputation for healthiness. However, they may contain a number of toxic contaminants accumulated in their tissues. These compounds include microbial agents (bacteria, viruses and parasites), biotoxins, seafood allergens and chemicals (pollutants). The recovery of bioactive compounds from marine organism is associated with the risk of human intoxication. Clinical symptoms of seafood-associated illnesses are specific, depending on dose and consumer health status ; therefore, they range from mild and acute reactions to life- threatening and chronic adverse reactions.
dioxins/PCBs, environmental toxicology, fish and shellfish allergy, histamine fish poisoning, marine algal toxins, methylmercury, neurotoxins, risk/benefit, seafood-associated infections
