Black-coated ware from Issa: evidence of local crafts or seaborne cultural connectivity?
Black-coated ware has been discovered on several sites along the central eastern Adriatic region (Dalmatia region in modern Croatia). The available published data reports mostly on its funeral context, although some evidence has been procured during excavations of habitual areas, as well as sanctuaries. Local Hellenistic production of this type of pottery, based on morphology and macrosopical observations of fabric, has been suggested for two settlements, Greek cities of Faros (modern Stari grad) and Issa (modern Vis), situated on the middle Dalmatian islands of Hvar and Vis, respectively. However, up until now, the in-depth study of black-coated ware from central Dalmatia, including its local production, is completely lacking. Based on comparative morphological and contextual investigation, as well as mineralogical and chemical analysis undertaken on a limited number of samples the purpose of this contribution is to communicate preliminary research findings on black- coated ware from Issa. The compositional properties of ceramic and clayey raw material suggested a high probability of local manufacture.
