Croatian and German as a foreign language in a virtual environment – from the perspective of e-instructors and e-learners

Contemporary technological achievements have been changing our lives and life habits fundamentally, thereby exerting a huge influence on the process of learning and teaching. This paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of online learning and teaching of Croatian and German as a foreign language viewed from two different perspectives: from that of the e-instructor and from that of the e-learner. The paper deals with the role of teacher in online courses as well as with experiences of e-learners i.e. of e-course participants of the German and Croatian language courses. The first e-course of Croatian as a foreign language for the elementary level in Croatia and e-courses of German as a foreign language organised by the Goethe-Institut in Zagreb as a part of the programme for the professional development of German teachers constitute the case study for this research. Beside the comparison of the online courses regarding their design and lesson organisation, a special stress is laid on the importance of regular, written or oral, communication between e-instructors and e- learners which has been proved to have a significant impact on the motivation of learners in distance learning. Since motivation is one of the key factors in language learning and in a successful language acquisition, it has been shown that motivation is the main reason for (not) giving up e-programmes (Muilenburg and Berge, 2005). Beside various activities and assignments designed for independent work within the e-learning system which encourage the development of learner's independence in the learning process, providing e-learners with feedback about their results and progress as well as being informed about further activities and assignments through regular communicating with their e-instructor turn out to be essential in distance learning. According to Brandl (2002) the e-instructor has a role of guide and facilitator in the e- learning process whereas Moore (1989) sees an e-instructor as a “morale-booster” an encourager.
