Age, growth and mortality of big-scale sand smelt, Atherina (Hepsetia) boyeri Risso, 1810 in the Pantana lagoon, Croatia
Age, growth and mortality of Atherina (Hepsetia) boyeri (Risso, 1810)from the Pantana lagoon (Kaštela Bay, Split area) were studied. Atherina boyeri specimens were collected monthly during the spawning season - from March to July 2000. The fish were collected using a 50 m long baech seine. Individuals ranged in size between 4.3 and 11.8 cm (xLt=7.33± 1.4911). Age determination based on scale reading show that the population has a 4 year life cycle. Growth in length for both sexes was Lt ∞ = 17.21 (1– exp – 0.201 (t + 1.0285)). Females grew faster (k=0.347) than males (k=0.506). The slopes (b values)of the total length - weight regressions, which not differ significantly between sexes, indicate isometric growth for females (b=2.942) and males (b=2.947)(N=1129).The overal ratio was 1:1.03 in favor of females (p>0.05). Males were dominant in smaller and females in larger length classes. All individuals larger than 10.9 cm were females. The mortality rate was Z = 1.891/year and the natural mortality rate M=0.867/year. The exploitation rate, E=0.542, revealed a high fishing pressure on the stock in the studied area.
