The role of Gagliana grossa in the historical interpretation of the Late Renaissance period

This presentation shows the contextual aspect of the shipwreck of Gagliana grossa. In the first part of the presentation, we show how people connected with the ship can be presented as a micro-cosmical picture of the Renaissance world: their mutual connections, origins, businesses and interests cover almost the whole of Europe of the time. In the second half of the presentation, we have presented that this complicated interconnection among the agents dealing with the Gagliana grossa was possible because of a different position and the societal role navigators occupied in the 16th century: they played a crucial role in discoveries that changed the picture and understanding of the world, and thus were recognized as important bearers of knowledge of the time.
