Quality assessment of different types of Croatian honey between 2012 and 2016

In this study, a total of 227 various types of honey samples were collected from different areas in Croatia. All the samples were subjected to pollen analysis and assorted in several groups including rare honey types such as amorphous, sunflower, Christ's thorn, bearberry, heather, mandarin, willow, goldenrod, lavander, sage, rape and hawthorn. Also following group of honey were analysed: acacia, floral, chestnut, meadow, lime, honeydew. The following physicochemical properties were tested: electrical conductivity, diastase number, the content of water and hydroxymethylfurfural. All samples met the criteria for moisture content (< 20%) and ranged from 14.1% to 20.0%. Hydroxymethylfurfural concentrations ranged from 0.1 to 62.1 mg/kg and two samples did not meet the prescribed value (< 40 mg/kg). Electrical conductivity ranged from 0.10 to 2.16 mS/cm. Increased conductivity was determined for chestnut and honeydew honey, with average values of 1.33 and 1.14 mS/cm, which meets the requirements (> 0.8 mS/cm). In all other honey types, except lime, heather and bearberry, values has to be below prescribed 0.8 mS/cm and only two samples did not meet prescribed criteria. The lowest mean conductivity of 0.10 mS/cm was determined for acacia honey. Measured values for lime honey samples ranged from 0.47 mS/cm to 0.96 mS/cm with average value of 0.69 mS/cm. In this study honey samples show diastase activity ranging from 16.4 to 40.7. Average DN for all types of honey is above 8 which is in accordance with Croatian regulation ( diastase activity > 8.0 DN). It is shown that 98.2% of honeys tested is within the limits of acceptability prescribed by Croatian regulations
