Hindi and Sanskrit in erječnik, an on-line dictionary of Asian languages for students in Croatia

The small project Analysis of models and designs used in e-dictionaries for Asian languages was started last year at the Department of Information and Communication Sciences. Led by assistant professor, PhD Kristina Kocijan, it united language experts and information science experts with the goal of creating the core part of e-dictionary for learners of Asian languages in Croatia and neighboring countries. The goal was to create an on-line version of the dictionary that students of various Asian languages could use for learning. It is meant to help them develop the core vocabulary in particular Asian language in which they specialize, at the very beginning of their learning process. After studying the models of existing on-line dictionaries of four Asian languages (Hindi, Korean, Japanese and Sanskrit), and the definition of e-dictionary’s layout, the team members were assigned tasks according to their skills and specific knowledge. Thus, Janjić, Orešić and Pavelić were assigned development of language base for Hindi and Sanskrit. The presentation will show how the particular lexemes were chosen and what does the project upon its release hopes to achieve.
