Principles and application of CBCT diagnostics

CBCT is a technology for craniofacial diagnostics based on diffusion of a conical X ray beam in three dimensions. This method significantly increases image quality with small increase in radiation exposure compared to panoramic x-ray imaging. There is almost no field in dental and craniofacial medicine where CBCT did not improve diagnostic procedures. From the early beginnings, CBCT became the golden diagnostic standard in different fields of dental medicine. In orthodontics, it becomes an important tool in preoperative planning, estimating airways, image superimposition, asymmetry assessment, impacted teeth and pallataly displaced canines, vestibular cortex measurements etc. The special importance of this new diagnostic method is for temporomandibular joint and temporomandibular disorders diagnostics. This presentation reviews the basic principles of CBCT imaging, the possibilities of clinical application and the new perspectives of CBCT application in orthodontics.
