Das essayistische Werk Miroslav Krležas
This paper focuses on a series of aesthetically and politically inspired essays by Miroslav Krleža (1893 – 1981), one of the most prominent Croatian authors of the 20th century, which date from the 1920s and 1930s and can be seen as representative for the entire essayistic work of this author. The analyzed essays serve more than the author’s comment on different people and phenomena from the realm of arts and politics (especially in the German-speaking world): they document a profound creative process, which reflects Krleža’s effort to elaborate a concept of a new, socially engaged and realistic, but at the same time aesthetically sophisticated literature on the one hand and his opposition to growing dogmatic tendencies among the adherents of the literary Left in contemporary Croatia and Yugoslavia on the other hand.
