Mechanochemical and solution synthesis of halogen-bonded cocrystals of aromatic amines
The halogen bond has garnered increased focus from the crystal engineering viewpoint as a companion and counterpart to the well-researched hydrogen bond. The halogen bond is a directional intermolecuar interaction formed between an anisotropically polarized halogen atom, usually iodine or bromine, and an electron-rich atom serving as an acceptor. The acceptor can likewise be another halogen atom, however, oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur atoms are used more often in crystal engineering. 1, 4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (tfib) is an oft used and well-researched molecule that is a good halogen bond donor.
