Electrochemical Behaviour of Mono- and Oligo-nucleotides. II. Adsorption Stages and Interfacial Orientations of Adenine Mononucleotides at the Mercury-Solution Interface
A systematic study of the adsorption of the following adenine mononucleotides was undertaken at the charged mercury/solution interface: adenosine 5'-monophosphate (5'-AMP), adenosine 3'-monophosphate (3'-AMP), adenosine 3', 5'-monophosphate (3', 5'-AMP), adenosine 5'-diphosphate (5'-ADP) and adenosine 5'-triphosphate (5'-ATP). The adsorption was followed by single sweep voltammetry (measurement of the time integral of the reduction peak of adenine) and by phase sensitive a.c. polarography (course of the capacitive current) at a hanging mercury drop electrode. The potential dependence of the coverage has a bell shaped form with a plateau around the potential of zero charge (PZC). The coverage measured at the same solution concentration around PZC decreases in the series AMP, ADP, ATP and the potential range of adsorption narrows at the same time. Among the monophosphates the coverage at the PZC decreases in the series 3'-AMP, 5'-AMP, cyclic 3', 5'-AMP. The variations are explained with the varying charge on the mononucleotides and with the interaction of the bases with other units. At an elevated coverage phase-changes in the adsorbed layer were observed for all the mononucleotides in the potential region around the PZC.
